SAMS Tree Service

Things to look for in a professional tree service

I recently had some storm damage in my yard and it was beyond the skills of my meager green thumb. So I knew I would need to hire a tree service franchise, but whom? I found tree removal franchises, tree trimming franchises and tree inspection franchises but I had no idea where I should start my search so I just started calling some of the Georgia tree franchises. I figured that local talent would know my needs the best. I learned quite a bit in a short time and not all of it was good. Here is a list of things to be wary of when contacting a tree service:

  • People coming door to door. If they are known for their solid work then they probably won’t need to knock on doors.
  • If they want payment up front. Many companies will want the cost of materials up front and that is understandable. Payment for the labor is always paid after.
  • If they are pressuring you into making a snap decision for a limit time price, it is not a good sign
  • If they show up right after a major storm, they are usually the tree removal franchise version of an “ambulance chaser”
  • Keep in mind that a rule of proper pruning is never remove more than 25% of the limbs or branches per year, it is bad for the tree

Some of the tree service franchises will not offer the same list of services as others so never assume that they offer a service because other tree services do. For instance, one of the tree services had a certified Arborist on staff to help with your problems and answer your questions. Another tree inspection franchise, that will remain nameless, did not know what I meant when I asked to speak with their arborist. So here are a few things you will want to ask a Georgia tree franchise:

  • Do you have a certified ISA arborist on staff?
  • Are you bonded?
  • Do you have insurance?
  • Is your company a member of any professional organizations?
  • Can I have a list of your references?

I know this may seem like a lot to ask just to have someone come out and maintain your property. You may be right but when a man is going up a tall ladder, to cut the top out of a tree directly over my house with a chainsaw, well, better safe than sorry.
